Ochre
FIELD NOTE no. 003People think ochre is a paint color.
It isn’t.
Ochre is a sun hanging just above the horizon, turning a green leaf into something else entirely.
The leaf is still green.
The light says otherwise.
In painting, we learn to start with ochre.
A thin layer beneath everything else.
Most of it disappears.
You rarely see it directly.
But somehow it brings life to whatever comes after.
Maybe that’s why ochre never felt like a color to me.
It’s light.
Still lingering in the trees.
Still finding the edges of leaves.
Still doing its work long after the day has begun to disappear.
